Unite, the foremost experts on negotiating pay in Scotland have launched a blueprint for boosting workers’ pay amid rising inflation and slow pay growth in 2017.
Unite negotiated an 8.7 per cent pay increase over two years for hundreds of workers at the famous Tunnock’s in Lanarkshire, raising most full time workers’ pay by around £1,500.
Unite is already protecting thousands of workers’ pay packets throughout 2016 and into 2017 through the union’s negotiations with employers across the region. Now the union has launched a ‘Pay Claim Guide’ to support Unite representatives in how to formulate arguments and table demands to improve pay and conditions.
The leading think tank the Resolution Foundation has warned that falling living standards for low- and middle-income families are being threatened with the biggest rise in inequality since Margaret Thatcher was prime minister. But having a strong trade union in the workplace gives workers an advantage when it comes to negotiating pay in the workplace.
“Unite, the biggest union and foremost experts on pay in Scotland have launched a blueprint to help workers boost their pay,” said Unite general secretary Len McCluskey. “Unite negotiations at the world famous Tunnock’s secured an 8.7 per cent pay increase over two years. Inflation is on the rise at a time when pay is growing at a snail’s pace and for many workers not at all. Unite has achieved some real progress in pay for thousands of workers across Scotland.
“Unite has also launched a powerful new online tool to help workers protect themselves from attacks on their pay from employers following the fallout of the Brexit vote. The new database will give union negotiators unparalleled access to pay data for their region and their industrial sector giving workers more power at the bargaining table with employers.”
Unite has launched a revolutionary online tool for the union’s negotiators which allows them to access a database of thousands of pay deals across Scotland. The database means union negotiators will be armed with details of the latest and best pay deals meaning employers will not be able make bold claims about their pay offers.
It is the first time the trade union movement has developed such a comprehensive database of pay deals in order to drive forward a coordinated pay strategy and help protect workers’ pay packets from the potential impact of Brexit.
