George Floyd, whose murder at the hands of police sparked global protests last summer, was killed exactly a year ago today (May 25).
Unite’s National Black and Asian Ethnic Minority Committee marks the anniversary of George Floyd’s death with a special statement below:
Monday 25th May 2020 — a day the world watched the brutal murder of George Floyd that sent shock waves throughout the world, and once again highlighted the institutional and systemic racism which still exists in all of our societies in the 21st century.
2020 further exposed the structural, systemic and institutional racism endured by black people for generations. The murder of George Floyd and the disproportionate impact of the pandemic on black people highlighted the need for immediate action. This is an opportunity to ensure that society, politicians and employers address with urgency historic racial disparities, and the persistent racist behaviours and attitudes, that pervade our institutions.
One year on Unite National Black & Asian Ethnic Minority Committee reflects on the task ahead.
- We continue to raise awareness of black injustices with the Black Lives Matter Movement.
- We continue to lead the way in anti-racist education through Unite’s Unity Over Division campaign – a vital initiative for raising awareness and addressing inequalities in our workplaces, schools and communities.
- We demand that organisations focus on equality, diversity and inclusion.
- We demand that organisations make radical changes to address under-representation in the workplace.
- We call on both the private and public sector to implement, monitor and review all practices and policies in the workplace to ensure they are equality-proofed.
