Prime minister Keir Starmer gave a wide-ranging speech at Labour Conference on Tuesday (September 24) in which he outlined some policy and a wider vision of a Labour government under his leadership. But there was scant detail on his offer for workers.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham responded to Starmer’s speech in a number of television interviews immediately following his speech. Commenting, she said, “Today was a historic moment: a Labour prime minister addressed the Labour party conference for the first time in 15 years. There is no doubt that Britain is better off under a Labour government and the speech showed serious intent.

“However, the fact is that the cut to the Winter Fuel Allowance was not reversed and investment for jobs in the future not clear. We still have some way to go for a plan for Britain.”
