Unite’s eighth policy conference opened on Monday (July 7) with a speech by Unite Executive Council (EC) chair Andy Green.
Andy highlighted how Unite, under general secretary Sharon Graham, has refocused the union on jobs, pay and conditions. He noted how the union has established a reputation for supporting its members in dispute, and how it has increased strike pay.
“Our wins speak for themselves,” he said, adding that after years of declining membership, Unite is now growing.
Andy also noted steps the union has taken to uncover corruption within Unite under the previous leadership.
The conference also opened with the adoption of standing orders, a report from the standing orders committee and a tribute paid to members who have sadly passed since Unite’s last policy conference.
The conference is due to run from Monday, July 7 to Friday, July 11. Stay tuned on UniteLive for the latest coverage of policy conference.
