Safety net is broken

Social security is a trade union issue

Unite Community is hosting an event in Bristol for trade union members and activists that will explore issues around the current social security system.

Organisers point out that it is clear that the social security safety net is broken, and that instead of being there to support those in need it has become a political tool to demonise and punish.

Social security isn’t a fringe issue, but impacts on workers and communities up and down the country, and with 15 million people relying on Universal Credit each month, the present system subsidies bad bosses and landlords

It is against this background that Unite Community, PCS Union and Disabled People Against Cuts have come together and organised “Social Security is a Trade Union Issue?” to bring together people to discuss what a fair and supportive system should look like.

The event takes place on Saturday 6 June at Tony Benn House in Bristol, with doors opening and the day running from 11.00am to 16.30pm.

In the morning people can hear from trade unionists, disabled activists and academics, while the afternoon is an opportunity to take part in workshops delivered by the organisers.

Speakers on the day include:
Keynote Speaker – Fran Heathcote General Secretary PCS
Chair – Martin Cavanagh PCS President
Sharlene Farrugia – PHD student Manchester Met University
Sharon Harding – Unite National Equalities Officer
Ellen Morrison – DPAC Executive and Unite Member
Angela Grant – President PCS DWP Group
Matt Allen – Regional Secretary Unite South West

Brett Sparkes, Unite Regional Community & Unite in Schools Coordinator said, “I am really pleased that Unite Community South West have had the opportunity to host this summit. Social security needs to work for all of those in need, be they ill or disabled, carers, between jobs or in low pay / part time work.

“For far too long, various governments have used social security as a political weapon against the poorest and most in need, demonising people who can’t make ends meet just because they need support.

“This narrative causes fear and division within our communities and must end. We call for a system that puts people first, that recognises their needs and removes societal barriers, a system that respects people, that doesn’t judge, a system that helps people achieve and that pays civil servants a wage they can live on.”

Rachel Beaney PCS SW regional secretary added, “Social Security is a Trade Union Issue will serve as a place to come together for activists, trade unionists and workers across the South West region.

“Working together to fight cuts and attacks on disabled people and demand access to a fair and just social security system is now more important than ever. Discussion will focus on how we best advocate for a fair and effective social security system while opposing further cuts or challenges.”

Tony Benn House has step free accessibility and lifts to all rooms BSL Interpretation will available at the event.

Unite Community member Andy Mitchell spoke about the issues at last year’s Tolpuddle Martyrs Festival, and wrote a piece for Unite Live at the time, which you can read here.
