Stop the rip off!
Unite says “It is time to end fuel poverty”
Reading time: 3 min
Unite Community will be staging a day of action on Wednesday 1 July 2026. The day of action takes place when the Energy Price Cap rises by £221 a year for an average household, and campaigners are saying that, “It is time to end fuel poverty”.
Fuel poverty is real for so many people, with some 12 million homes across the UK unable to afford to pay their energy bills. And these bills keep going up.
With so many already struggling the news the energy price cap is due to rise by £221 a year for the average household is particularly unwelcome – and at a time when excess profits by the energy companies also continue to rise.
The cost of energy has created a poverty and health crisis, and it’s surging again because of another illegal war.
Renewable energy offers a cheaper alternative, and if everyone had a fair share of locally produced green energy they could afford heating, lighting, washing, and cooking. But profits, unfair regulations and waste mean people can’t benefit from the energy that is cheap to produce.
Unite Community is working with Fuel Poverty Action and demanding an end to fuel poverty. The campaign demands are simple:
- Public ownership of the energy sector
- A worker-led transition to renewable energy
- Excess green energy should be free
Unite Community will be demonstrating outside the Department of Energy outside Whitehall at 10.00 on Wednesday 1 July 2026.
There will also be actions across the UK as local Unite Community branches take part in the campaign.

The campaign is just the latest example of how Unite Community is fighting for workers and their families beyond the workplace – in November members staged a high profile protest outside Parliament over Budget Day benefits cuts. Find out how to get involved with Unite Community here.
