Belonging - two years on

Unite’s Stevie Deans and Pat Rafferty reflect on award-winning documentary

Reading time: 3 min

Two years on from the release of investigative documentary Belonging The Truth Behind the Headlines about secret government plans during 3 disputes over 3 decades the film has gone on to win numerous awards.  Stevie Deans Unite Scotland’s regional co-ordinating officer, who features in the film along with his daughter Ailís and Pat Rafferty, Unite Scottish secretary, meets again with Morag Livingstone the film’s director / producer to discuss in a short film what has happened since.

Pat Rafferty comments,  “Our trade union history is often recorded and told by others. This film and Mark Lyon’s book The Battle of Grangemouth, tell the story from the trade union workers perspective – we need to encourage more good work that tells our history, told from our perspective.”

Stevie Deans adds, “It has been great to reflect on whats happened over the last two years since the documentary was released. The film is now shown on all Unite education courses in Scotland but we do need to get the film out into communities via branch screenings, so if you are on a course and want to hold a branch screening please ask for a copy.”

More information on how to watch the film, get a copy, or set up a community film screening can be found belonging4us.com or please email [email protected] for more information.

A copy of Mark Lyon’s book: The Battle of Grangemouth is available from Lawrence and Wishart at lwbooks.co.uk or a number of other outlets. Unite members get a discount by entering UNITE17
