Electricians urged to “Back the claim!”

Unite “calling on all electricians to support this campaign”

Reading time: 4 min

Restore the differentials. Reverse the wage cuts. Keep pace with soaring living costs. This is the call from Unite to electricians as it continues to work on the latest pay claim.

The Electricians United! campaign includes a new video to bring home the importance of backing the claim, a petition that will strengthen the Unite negotiating team’s position and an updated website full of resources.

The union has been working on this claim for a long time now, and the realignment of pay in the industry to the agreed differentials is a huge task. However Unite representatives have set about structuring this claim and are calling on all Unite electricians to get behind this campaign and back the claim.

Something they have started doing in their thousands already.

Jason Poulter explained the issue, “There is a shortage of electricians. We need to train 3,000 more apprentices a year. We need to encourage those apprentices to finish their apprenticeships and become electricians.”

“A decent wage rate compared to when they start as an apprentice to when they finish and become electricians is vital.”

Unite wants every electrician to be involved in the campaign to put the union in the strongest possible position when it comes to future negotiations.

There are some simple things that everyone can do:

  • Sign this petition
  • Get your work mates on board and share this page with fellow electrical workers.
  • Keep updated with progress and future meeting dates.

Scott Foley is a Unite Regional Officer and Lead Officer for the Scottish JIB. Scott said, “We need our members to get behind the pay claim to voice their support, to show that they believe in a future for the industry.

“Their future in the industry and our future in the industry and we want to work together with our members to try and get the best that we can achieve for them.”

Jason summed up saying, “I’m calling on all electricians to support this campaign, support the claim and get these differentials back in place. Give us any feedback, give us any comments.

“If you know someone who’s not a member but is a friend of yours, pass it on to them, encourage them to join, encourage them to be part of the campaign. Because it’s not just about the union doing its usual thing. It’s about their future.”

So watch the film, sign the petition, check out the website and resources and most importantly Back The Claim!
