Inspirational women

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham paid tribute to women around the world at an International Women’s Day event on Thursday (March 5).

The event, organised by the Unite Northeast, Yorkshire and Humberside (NEYH) region, took place at Wortley Hall in Sheffield, where Unite members and activists gathered to honour inspirational women.

Graham cut the ribbon to officially open the ‘Garden of Inspirational Women’.

After the unveiling of the plaque and garden, Graham gave a speech. She was later followed by another guest speaker, Nan Sloane, a Labour historian and author who has extensively researched the role of women in the public space.

Graham said in her speech, “On International Women’s Day 2026,  I’d like to pay tribute to all of our women reps, workers, officers, organisers and staff – you are at the forefront of our union, fighting for workers every day. We honour our women activists at the bargaining table, on the picket lines, fighting for better pay, fighting to close the gender pay gap and pension gap. Thank you and solidarity.”

Unite regional secretary Karen Reay and Unite regional chair Sally Alfady introduced the guest speakers, and Sally concluded the event with closing remarks.

The ever popular Unite Brass Band also performed to widespread applause.
