Unite encourages men to take action on health

Unite is backing International Men’s Day today (November 19) and encouraging men to today, and every day, take action to look after their own physical and mental health.

International Men’s Day is an annual event that celebrates worldwide the positive value men bring to the world, their families and communities. Organisers aim to highlight positive role models and raise awareness of men’s well-being.

Unite’s National Health and Safety Advisor Rob Miguel explained why men’s health matters, saying, “Men are facing a health crisis that often goes unnoticed. On average, men die four to five years earlier than women, and many of these deaths are preventable.

“Suicide remains the leading cause of death among men aged 15–49, and millions more battle untreated mental health conditions. Cancers like prostate and testicular cancer affect millions each year, yet stigma and silence often prevent early detection and treatment.”

Rob said that there are four things that men can do to take action straight away.

• Talk Openly: Start conversations about mental health. It’s okay to not be okay, and talking can save lives.

• Know Your Nuts: Get familiar with what is normal for you so you can spot changes early.

• Get Checked: Men are less likely to see a doctor for symptoms, but early detection is crucial for many cancers.

• Support Others: Check in with friends and family to see how they are really doing.
