'Our members stood firm'

Further strike action at an historic Shropshire wheel factory has been called off after workers voted to accept an improved pay offer from the company, Unite said today (September 7).

Unite members employed at GKN Wheels and Auto Structures in Telford voted for strike action in June over the company’s refusal to implement a pay rise.

Following negotiations with the company, the workers voted to accept improved two year pay deal, which will benefit around 200 staff.

The historic factory, which is more than 100 years old and produced Spitfire planes during the Second World War, was bought by private equity firm Aurelius in 2020.

The factory has no connection with GKN Automotive where Unite is currently fighting a factory closure in Birmingham.

Unite regional officer Jason Richards said, “Our members stood firm and following the threat of sustained collective action achieved a pay deal that reflected their hard work and dedication to the company.

“This dispute is a reminder that workers who want to improve their wages and T&Cs should join Unite,” he added.

“Unite is dedicated to advancing the jobs, pay and conditions of its members and will fight back against any efforts to diminish workers’ living standards.”
