Shrewsbury 24 latest

Unite today (March 6) welcomed a decision by the Criminal Case Review Commission to refer the historic convictions of eight members of the Shrewsbury 24 to the Court of Appeal.

 

The union has provided support and financial backing for the Shrewsbury 24 Campaign to overturn the convictions of the building workers, who were arrested during the early 1970s while picketing over pay in Shrewsbury, Shropshire.

 

The eight appeals apply to those who were jailed or received suspended prison sentences in 1973-74.

 

Unite assistant general secretary Howard Beckett said, “This is excellent news and hopefully the referral to the Court of Appeal will lead to the miscarriage of justice experienced by those amongst the Shrewsbury 24 who were jailed or given suspended sentences being overturned.

 

“It has taken far too long to get to this stage but the victims, whose only crime was to be trade unionists, can rest assured that Unite will support them every step of the way until justice is done.”
