Nationwide Day of Action over energy price hikes planned
Reading time: 3 min
Unite is encouraging members to take to the streets and get involved with a national day of action on 1 April to highlight the impact of the rising cost of energy on communities.
Unite Community and Unite Retired Members Branches are organising protests nationwide in response to OFGEM’s 6.4% price hike on 1st April, and demanding energy production and supply returns to public ownership.
Members say they should not have to choose between heating or eating. In the fifth richest country in the world people should not be dying in their own homes because of fuel poverty.
Matt Hannam is Regional Community & Unite in Schools Coordinator in North East, Yorkshire & Humber, and is encouraging as many members as possible to get involved on the day.
Matt said, “Join us. Street stalls, leafleting, banner drops, die ins, demonstrations – get involved, get along and support the protests in your locality and if there is nothing planned where you live get in touch and we will help you organise.”
Protests are currently planned in the following towns and cities, but more are in the pipeline:
Swansea
Bradford
Leeds
Gateshead
Doncaster
