The threat of strike action at Leamington Spa based dumper truck makers Thwaites has ended after workers overwhelmingly accepted a vastly improved pay offer.
Over 60 members of Unite had voted for strike action. However, following the ballot result, last ditch negotiations were held and the company made a vastly improved pay offer which members accepted.
The workers, who are highly skilled and undertake various roles on the company’s production line, will receive an increase of 5.25 per cent backdated to September last year, the anniversary date for the annual pay increase and above the retail price index (RPI) rate for the time. The company had initially offered a pay increase of just three per cent.
Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said, “This agreement demonstrates, yet again, that when workers stand together in unity they can secure a fair pay increase.
“Unite is entirely dedicated to supporting and defending the jobs pay and conditions of its members,” she added. “Unite will back to the hilt all members who are currently struggling with the cost of living crisis, especially where companies are intent on boosting profits by suppressing workers’ pay.”
As part of the agreement it was agreed by both sides that the anniversary date for the annual pay increase of September will be honoured and Unite will table a fresh pay claim for September 2022.
Unite regional officer Su Lowe noted, “The pay campaign has been highly beneficial, members now understand that they have industrial power and they appreciate the power of collective bargaining.
“It is hoped that following the amicable conclusion of this pay dispute, future industrial relations with Thwaites will be conducted in a far more harmonious manner, which will benefit all concerned.”
